and since update-manager also installs new packages, like kernel images or new libs, it should ask for authentication. Not sure, actually I didn't pay attention closely enough (excuse: sometimes there were hundreds), but it may likely be the authentication request occurs when new packages were about to be installed. If this is expected behaviour then this bug report is invalid.
