Yes, the START=yes is there in /etc/default/thinkfan. After reporting the bug I found that thinkfan does work properly from time to time and then I don't have to start it manually. I have no idea when and why this is the case but what I can say is that also the energy saving mechanism which switches off the screen after 10 mins or so is not working at the same time and only at the same time.
