I have installed latest mainline kernel from the mainline kernel builds and the wired network is behaving.

I'll keep this for a while and see if it stays robust. I have been informed via G+ that this issue occurs in other distros and may be mitigated by doing a full hard shutdown / start rather than a warm reboot.
