I can't contribute anything to this in the way of help, but I also have this 
issue with my headphones - I can provide any hardware and bug information you 
need to sort this out.
I've just upgraded to Oneiric on my mum's computer, and now we're having this 
volume problem with the headphones (possibly with the main speaker output as 
well, although I can't test this right now), rendering her headphones totally 
unusable.

As with several other people who have commented on here, I can get
perfect volume with the alsamixer control, but when I change the volume
with the volume keys (or through the pulseaudio mixer), the volume
levels go all over the place. In fact, watching them change in alsamixer
is really weird - none of the changes seem to make sense.

If an actual fix is found (even if only for my soundcard 'ICH7 82801G'),
could someone please post it to http://askubuntu.com/questions/65565
/headphone-output-is-far-too-loud as well?
