I ran the apt-get commands you suggested but it did not seem to help.

While doing this I noticed that I have what seem to be some 64bit
kernels installed!!  I didn't do this, honestly.  So I tried re-
installing linux-image-2.6.38-11-generic-pae (which I took to be 32bit)
- this failed with the same error.

I considered removing linux-image-2.6.38-11-generic which appears to be
64bit but decided against until I had a successful alternate kernel
install.

So I then tried installing linux-image-2.6.38-10-generic-pae but this
failed as well.
