I am seeing the exact same problem which exists with both vim-gtk and vim-gnome.
A workaround is to install vim-athena which is incredibly ugly but at least it works. I can also confirm that removing .vimrc files makes no difference. Running the vim-gtk and vim-gnome binaries in console mode works fine.
