Public bug reported:

In prior releases, irssi was published without the 18bind_utf8-fix patch
which was designed to fix a problem with binds and utf8 keys. This
breaks the default behavior of alt-backspace, which is to delete the
prior word (much the same as ctrl-w does).

The upstream bug is located at
http://bugs.irssi.org/index.php?do=details&task_id=553

I've attached an untested patch (written by Marien Zwart (marienz))
that seeks to correct this.
