Summary explains it all. Gnome Shell is unusable at this point because
it looks like it is zoomed in. From display settings I can see that the
resolution selected is the correct one.

Title:
  Desktop is zoomed in right after login. It looks like the resolution
  drops and I'm able to see one fourth of the desktop at a time. View
  area moves with mouse.
