I've now upgraded to 11.10 and am indeed still experiencing this issue. The fix above still works, so having assigned that a keyboard shortcut it's a minor issue, but a fix would be a nice. Unfortunately, I am not in a position to be trying an unstable kernel, but perhaps knowing that the issue didn't disappear can be helpful.
