I'm having the same problem with 11.10 x86, release version, booting from live CD - Dash pops up and I can click to focus the text input, but I can't type anything in. Hitting Esc does work to cancel the dash.
Input works in Firefox etc and system settings applets, it's only Dash that's affected. System is a Core 2 Duo with plenty of RAM, runs Ubuntu 8.04 normally.
