I seem to have found a workaround: First install polipo. Then run "polipo parentProxy=proxy.domain:port parentAuthCredentials=username:password &" In the "Network Proxy" preferences: choose "Manual Proxy configuration", set the "HTTP proxy" field to 127.0.0.1, set the port to whatever port polipo said it was listening on, check "use the same proxy for all protocols", and make sure it isn't trying to use authentication (because polipo should take care of that now, not your other programs).
