@Reinhard: it is enough to shut down Skype and restart it again: In a terminal windown type
$ killall skype And then restart Skype from applications or typing it into an Alt+F2 window. The Skype icon reappears on the panel... for a while at least... But this is a less time-consuming version, and you don' t have to restart all the applications you've been using.
