Public bug reported:

After installing the gnome metapackage (which includes gnome-shell), I noticed
the following problems:
 - There is no shutdown/suspend/restart option, only a logout option. I read
that one can reach those by pressing alt after clicking on the upper right part
of the desktop, but this will not work for me.
 - sudo halt in a terminal hangs up the system
 - the unity desktop gets broken, by missing the sidebar

All this happened after I installed gnome-shell, before everything
worked ok
