Same problem here... started yesterday after an upgrade...
Startup hangs on "checking battery status", I can press alt+f1 and switch to 
another terminal but I cannot log in (login incorrect error).
Selecting "recovery mode" (from grub) and resuming the normal boot leads 
correctly to lightdm, but gnome shell starts in fallback mode.
Strangely grub shows me the debian theme at startup.
