Using the boot cd, can you add to this bug the output of:
sudo lspci -vv
Also, if you can use the boot cd to get to the hard drive of the broken
installation it's possible that /var/log/Xorg.0.log from the
hard drive (not the running CD) and /var/log/syslog and /var/log/kern.log may
have something to say.
