Seems I'm running into them roughly every day or two,
which makes this the main roadblock towards hitting
my one-week-between-spurious-failures goal.

Ideas (in order I might try them):
- install alsa-plugins from git
- install candidate packages from ubuntu (e.g. new gcc)
- disable pulseaudio
- downgrade from ubuntu-11.10
