thanks for the reply. i suspect that the problem is my fault. i am migrating 
from fedora and
 did some questionable things in an attempt to preserve my home directory. i 
think that it
 was a permissions problem. i did a more sensible thing by copying the stuff i 
care about to the
 side, creating an ubuntu environment, then moving my stuff back in. things now 
seem to be
 functioning in a sensible way. sorry for the bother.
