Hi Peter,
  Looking at the log seems to indicate that your hard drive is failing; I 
suggest checking it out with whatever tools you have to hand - the 'Disk 
utility' which I think is on the CD has a 'view SMART data' that should be a 
start.

That 'medium error' is normally a fairly good indicator that it is a
hardware fault
