Upgrading from KDE 4.7.1 (default for Kubuntu 11.11) to 4.7.2 (from Kubuntu PPA) solved the problem on the upgraded install. I realized only after posting my above comment that my other machine had 4.7.2 from Kubuntu PPA. So bottom line is that those who install Kubuntu 11.11 as- is (with KDE 4.7.1) are likely to be affected, while those who add the Kubuntu PPA get 4.7.2 with the fix.
I hope this information is helpful to those who like me google up the error message. And I also hope that 4.7.2 supersedes 4.7.1 in the default Kubuntu ASAP so that it works out of the box rather than making it dependent on the Kubuntu PPA. Or just add the Kubuntu PPA by default.
