I managed to fix this issue. It seems to be a problem with the ATI fglrx driver.
I switched to the open source ATI driver, and now Gnome 3 looks fine. I had to follow this guide to get rid of the proprietary driver though: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/FglrxInteferesWithRadeonDriver#Problem:%20%20Need%20to%20fully%20remove%20-fglrx%20and%20reinstall%20-ati%20from%20scratch -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/868111 Title: gnome 3.2 menu contains "garbage" To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/meta-gnome3/+bug/868111/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
