I have the same symptoms as Stapel reported. Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit updated with latest updates. After update and reboot, sound wouldn't work, sound icon displaying muted icon. Sound settings showed no hardware present. Unplugged the Logitech webcam and sound works again.
