Note that this only happens with Unity 3D; it doesn't happen with Unity 2D.
I've checked Xorg.0.log / Xorg.0.log.old, and it's *not* an X crash. Despite the apparent similarity to my <http://askubuntu.com/questions/50729/using-kdm-kde-login-manager- literally-every-other-attempt-to-log-into-gnome>. ** Description changed: 1. sudo apt-get install kdm 2. sudo dpkg-reconfigure kdm. Switch to kdm as login manager. 3 Reboot. 4. Login once into "Ubuntu" (i.e. Unity 3D). 5. Logout. 6. Login again. Result: Unity crashes before it's appeared, and boots you back to the login screen. I can repeat steps 4-6, and the same result occurs. - I think it's unity-panel-service: + [I originally thought this was a segfault in unity-panel service, + because of kernel log messages. But I wasn't sure about the timing, and + I've since seen it happen without any segfault message.
