Install gconf with sudo apt-get install gconf-editor
Used it to change /apps/nm-applet from 3 to 2 and it worked. Thanks. 

I think it is something related with the new "Elimination of the User
Settings Service" described
http://projects.gnome.org/NetworkManager/developers/migrating-to-09/ref-
migrating.html

But I didn't find clear information for me, to understand how to change
these settings...
