I had another system with the same upgrade problem. The apt log showed
it failed on the nspluginwrapper:i386. I uninstalled the nspluginwapper.
The upgrade to 11.10 when without a problem. Everything seems to be
working fine. The original system I reported this problem against
seems to have a hardware problem which accounts for the other strange
stuff.

I don't know whether the nspluginwapper upgrade problem I had is a bug
or not. The work around is simply remove it, do the upgrade, provide
you don't have a hardware problem,
