I have similar problem.
Just a few hours after upgrading to 11.10, i was going to install few programs.
At first it worked okay, but than i add some more to install and after that
some more. It get stuck in the process. Now there are four of them stucked "In
Progress". It has been nearly all day stucked and after clicking on the "In
progress" icon it doesnt show anything. Other windows of Software center work
allright and without any stucking.
I should maybe also say that I am quite newbie in Linux, dont understand all
that programming but someone adviced on net to run it through terminal, it
write back this and Software center was again just 4 "in progress" without any
progress..
here what terminal wrote while starting Software center:
