Public bug reported:

Using the official Ubuntu 11.10 oneiric AMI for EC2 (in the us-east-1
region), attempting to start atop from the command line hangs.

Checking /var/log/kern.log yields:

It's entirely possible the bug is actually in the kernel, but so far
this behavior only manifests itself when running atop.
