I have a similar problem in Kubuntu 11.10. Muting works ok, but unmuting
does not restore the sound. After unmuting I have to toggle also both
the Front and Headphones switches:
$ amixer sset Front toggle; amixer sset Headphone toggle
(In my system PCM has no switch, but "Front" has.)
After that the sound is restored. I suspect that this problem is a
kernel bug in snd-hda-intel module or so.
