Public bug reported:
When changing from single single to dual display in nvidia settings (or
vice versa), unity often crashes.
It's possible that it crashed while switching VTs to access the
debugger.
Problems begun on upgrade to Oneiric.
What I expected to happen:
Monitor reconfiguration should occur without incident.
What happens instead:
Screen goes completely black (except mouse pointer), or garbled.
