As bwallum  has mentioned, the current behavior is about the best it
could be. Whether  conforming to the current design or not shouldn't be
subservient to what's best.

As it stands now the 2 biggest complaints can be resolved by user choice - 
One is the  issue of  inadvertently exposing the launcher when going for the 
quit button - that can't happen whether the user has the left top corner or 
left edge reveal set

The other issue with the launcher being exposed when working on the left
side of a window, like the back button in firefox, this currently can be
resolved by the user by selecting the top left corner and deselecting
the left edge

So whether intended or not you currently have got it correct & certainly
should consider leaving it that way.
