You mean "left-hand side" or are you on a right-to-left locale?

Also, I see exactly the same, _intentional_, behavior on both unity and
unity-2d. If the launcher is hidden, whether by a maximized window, or
one that it would otherwise overlap, you can bring the launcher back by
reaching the screen edge, where the launcher normally is. Is that not
the case for you?
