Sorry, I must have made myself unclear. This doesn't work for me, out of
the box, when I have nothing blacklisted, so I guess it is not invalid.

With everything default, I have after booting:
$ lsmod | grep rt
rt2800pci 18340 0
rt2800lib 48717 1 rt2800pci
crc_ccitt 12595 1 rt2800lib
rt2x00pci 14202 1 rt2800pci
rt2x00lib 48114 3 rt2800pci,rt2800lib,rt2x00pci
mac80211 272785 3 rt2800lib,rt2x00pci,rt2x00lib
cfg80211 172392 2 rt2x00lib,mac80211
eeprom_93cx6 12653 1 rt2800pci
parport_pc 32114 0
parport 40930 3 parport_pc,ppdev,lp

... and I get "Device not managed" in the network indicator. Now, it was
mentioned in some forums that there is a conflict between the rt2800 and
rt2x00 drivers, which is why I then tried blacklisting either, but that
didn't work. Neither the rt2800 or the rt2x00 modules in any combination
work for me.

I managed to install the rt2860sta driver from ralink (
http://www.ab9il.net/linuxwireless/rt2860.html ), which works (although
it is slow with some access points).

I guess there is an incompatibility with the "new" modules and (at least
some revisions of) the rt2860. Naively I would expect Ubuntu to ship
with the old drivers as long as this problem persists with the new ones,
or at least offer me an option to install it as a proprietary/optional
driver. The way it is now, this is just a regression, and I would ask
you to consider reopening this bug.
