Oh! I see my confusion now. Sorry, but it appears ia32-libs uninstalled
subversion (that would explain why I cannot execute it). If I try to re-
install it I get the following error message:

user@host:~$ sudo apt-get install subversion | tee subversion.txt

Reading state information...
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

 subversion : Depends: libsvn1 (= 1.6.12dfsg-4ubuntu5) but it is not going to 
be installed
