This is not a duplicate of #477256. That bug is about the i855 driver
and does not mention the i915 driver or the
"[drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU
hung" syslog entry.
This is the exact message I see in the syslog:

After this the GPU does not work. I can restart X but only get a blank
screen with a mouse on it.
Anyone find any workarounds for this? One might be to use the vesa
driver but that is less than ideal.
