A fresh install did indeed resolve these issues. The sound indicator is fine, compiz is working fine, hard switch for wireless is good, awn is good. Also, one other issue I forgot to mention was that the Additional Drivers icon in the System Settings wouldn't load any window. Double- click - nothing would happen. That, too, has been resolved by a fresh install.
