Hope you don't mind I'd like to add my 2p (apologies up front if I'm not
meant to post here or this is not the best way to do it)...

In 11.04 I hit super/windows, dash opens, I type the thing I want (or
partial name), hit enter, the program starts. I do this frequently as I
know the search that brings the program up as the leftmost item. This is
a repeatable, quick process for me and it means I don't have a sidebar
full of icons as I use a range of programs day-to-day (I use Ubuntu in
work and at home for software development and general use). In fact it
is such a quick process that quite often dash hasn't actually loaded the
icons by the time I've hit enter but the program still loads fine. Also
due to that process being so quick I often find it quicker than actually
going to the sidebar and I don't need to leave the keyboard to use the
mouse to start a program, so albeit small it is an increase in
efficiency (for me) as I can reach for the mouse (if I need to) whilst
the program is loading.

Comment #6 - I've experienced this and found it quite jarring coming
from 11.04.

Comment #7 - I'd agree that what you have described is a consistent,
repeatable process; however, I think being able to start typing a name
and hitting enter as you know the item you want will be first in the
list is also consistent and repeatable and should remain available. As
the Dash approach appears to me to be focused on accessing things
quickly through a "searching" mechanism then having this slight increase
of efficiency (I.e. automatically selecting the closest match when
hitting enter) is an important nuance to keep.

Thanks.
