Looks like a compatibility problem of the adapter cable.

can you run the following commands in thge given order and post all
their output:

lsusb
lsusb -vvv
sudo /usr/lib/cups/backend/usb
sudo lsmod | grep usb
sudo modprobe usblp
sudo usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0
sudo usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp1
sudo usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp2
sudo rmmod usblp

Note also that HPLIP recognizes only directly connected or network
printers. In addition, the PPA printers, like the 710 are not supported
by HPLIP and therefore not detected by HPLIP.
