In order to keep the network up i need to add the following to my crontab
*/5 * * * * ping -c 1 my.eth0.network >/dev/null
*/5 * * * * ping -c 1 my.br0.network >/dev/null

Problem still exists - seems to connected to system idle or no input
always starts with - CPU 1 is now offline

Traced eth0 going down -

** Description changed:

  My usb bus keeps sleeping and powering back up
  It does this to the point that I get messages about the new id being refused
by the device.
  My usb mouse gets turned off after only a couple of minutes.
  Also my network devices are getting turned off - I have listening services
that are then crashing due to the interface going down.
  I have to restart networking to "wake them up" and reinitialize them - then I
have to restart all the services attached.

  Since the services in question are - dhcpd and openvpn to allow me to
  remote access my desktop and allow my family a secure environment - this
  is more than annoying.

  I would rather not allow the usb bus and the network devices to sleep at
  all.

  I noticed the USB sleep thing in UBUNTU 11.04 - but just thought it was
normal - annoying but normal
  I discovered that It was affecting a usb DTV dongle. - It would eventually
not operate.

  But it has gotten worse in 11.10 - exceedingly so.
