Public bug reported: System: Ubuntu 11.10 64-Bit up-to-date
Motherboard: ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 Graphic Card: Sapphire Radeon HD5450 Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 970 Black RAM: Kingston KVR133D3N9 2x 4 GB BIOS version 7.4.05: Standard Settings using IDE (default) Be warned, this is a long one. What you expected to happen: The goal was to install Ubuntu 11.10 on my dads PC using a 64-Bit USB drive. What happened instead: Start conditions - Installed Ubuntu 10.10 64-Bit After booting to the USB drive and selecting the language the problems began. Selecting one of the following menu items resulted always in a frozen system: 'Try without installing', 'Install', 'Check installation medium'. We downloaded new iso's and tried again using normal or alternate CD/USB drives with the same result. All we could see was an blinking cursor in the upper left corner after hitting enter on one of the menu items. After googling without success => http://askubuntu.com/questions/70655 /cant-see-installation-main-screen His PC was still running 10.10 because we had the same problems when trying to installing 11.04 a half year ago. So next thought was, okay lets boot to 10.10 and do an update using the graphical update-manager. It was possible to install 11.04. First boot stocked (system friezed again), but I managed after a couple of reboots using the recovery mode and selecting an older Kernel (2.6.35-30-generic) to boot into 11.04 and having a graphical shell. After installing all updates and a reboot I started again the graphical update-manager to install 11.10 - it worked so fare - installation was successful (no errors). After installing 11.10 I was able to boot normally + Internet was working. This was the time I started 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-desktop --save 10-22-2011-bug.apport', 'fdisk -l' and 'lshw' all added to this report. After shutting down the PC and booting again (~10 times) I was only able to boot one time to an graphical shell → no Internet connection that time. Every time I tried to boot regardless if I booted using the recovery mode or the normal mode the system friezed on different stages. Image 1 - don't know any more Image 2 - 2.6.35-30-generic recovery mode Image 3 - 3.0.0-12-generic recovery mode Image 4 - 2.6.35 normal I hope my description and the appended files might be of some use.
