I think I fixed this.  Not sure.

sudo rm /var/cache/apt/archives/smbclient_2%3a3.5.11~dfsg-
1ubuntu2_i386.deb


This type of error found during the upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10 is not 
intuitive enough for an end user to fix.  Ideally, the upgrade would do the 
same, removing the /var/cache/apt/archive for the offending package, and 
re-download the update.
