I still have the affected system and will have for at least the next 6 months, so I'm willing to do whatever I can to solve the problem. I had been thinking I would re-install the affected system to see if that solved the problem (I didn't do that when it was my daily working setup) but now I've switched over to 11.10 on the other drive, so we can keep the problem system and do as we please!
