I have the same problem on my "ATI Technologies Inc RS880 Audio Device [Radeon HD 4200]".
pavucontrol shows audio streams but there is no corresponding sound. I've just installed alsa-hda-dkms 0.201110231811~oneiric1 and the problem persists.
