I experienced this bug (with almost identical terminal output when I try to run "unity" in terminal) recently, though I don't know if under the same circumstances. I can trigger it 100% of the time in both my Asus G53SW notebook and Acer AspireOne netbook by opening CompizConfig Setting Settings Manager -> "Grid" plugin -> "Edges" tab and unchecking the "Snap windows back to original size" option. At that point, Unity, the launcher, panel, and window decorations will disappear as described. The problem will persist until the "Snap windows back to original size" option is rechecked and Unity is restarted either through the "unity" terminal command or by rebooting the computer. "unity --reset" will also fix the problem, although the user will lose any changes he's made to Compiz. The bug only affects the account on which it was triggered, and Unity2D will still work. If unity is restarted through the terminal and the bug is triggered again, the terminal will output "Segmentation fault."
