I too have a Dell laptop upgraded from 11.04. Not sure if the behavior I am seeing is related though. In 11.04, Unity was working fairly well. In 11.10 it does not start at login-- instead I get a Nautilus menu. If I switch to a virtual terminal and run "unity --replace" and then switch back to X, then unity does run for that session only. If I run ccsm, unity exits again when I exit ccsm. If I try to log in with another session type, such as Ubuntu 2D or Classic, I get the same behavior-- seems it is trying to run Unity anyway, and fails.
