Aha, interesting. My thinkpad r61 has this weird two kind of mice built
in, a touchpad with two buttons and a separate trackpoint with separate
three buttons. When using the middle button of those three, I get the
behaviour I described above. When using the middle bmouse button
emulation by pressing both the other keys (of the touchpad) it works as
expected. Pasting with the middle mouse button works however. Using
xev, I see that both button 1 and 2 have a press and release event which
fire at the appropriate times when holding them. Button 2 however
behaves really weird: Pressing it for a short time results in both
events firing at the same time, however, sometimes nothing appears at
all. Holding the button does not produce a press event or a release
event when releasing the button. In fact, repeatedly pressing the middle
button on a window with alt held, i sometimes see the resize icon for a
very short time flickering up. Something wrong with the synaptics driver
or something else interfering? I should try with a basic session only
using xterm as a session...
