I also have the problem here on 2 64bits machines.
2.6.20-15-generic #2 SMP Sun Apr 15 06:17:24 UTC 2007 x86_64
I tried all 3 alternative I have under
sudo update-alternatives --config java
* 1 /usr/bin/gij-wrapper-4.1
2 /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java
+ 3 /usr/lib/j2se/1.4/bin/java
but it does not change anything. Does firefox calls directly java ?
