One way to temporarily stop unity 3d hanging is a complete restart but it
happens so often this can be tiring. It happens when logging out of one session
into another. As I just did for the xsession-errors file; deleted my old
xsession file so a new one would be created when logging back into unity 3d
from unity 2d. It happens when switching users too. Once I log out of the other
user session back into unity main account I get hanging. When I am logged into
unity 3d standard user account, I never see any hanging.
I did a install of ubuntu 11.10 but left the home partition reused, unformatted.
