Public bug reported:

It was fine until a reboot (which was done for other reasons).

Now I get a "Failed to start the X server... ..Would you like to view
the X server output to diagnose the problem?" message which gets
written over by a login prompt before I can use it.

The shell is working fine.
My video card is an ATI Radeon Mobile.

/var/log/Xorg.0.log has a modification time coincident with my fatal
reboot and has these as its last four lines:

(II) ATI Candidate "Device" section "ATI Technologies, [...]"
(EE) No devices detected.
Fatal server error:
no screens found

** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-via (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Untriaged
