Well here is a solution hat works for me (although I am not entirely
sure why it works):

I installed gnome-shell on the remote machine and then modified /etc/X11
/default-display-manager so that it contains

/usr/sbin/gdm

instead of

/usr/sbin/lightdm

My intention was to try to run a virtual 'ubuntu classic' session and so
avoid unity.

The odd thing is that when I start a remote virtual session (with NX),
the unity desktop comes up and works perfectly.
