I am getting the same problem, I am using Ubuntu 11.10 64bit I have a microphone connected to the rear input and it is been selected in the sound settings/Input/Connector field. I can use the microphone in Google chrome voice search feature. But in the voice recorder, I get a tone recorded instead, It does not record from the microphone!! So when I tried to selected the "Open Volume control" from the file menu, I got this error: "gnome-volume-control is not installed in the path."
