Confirmed using an Ubuntu 11.10 i386 installation disk on VirtualBox. The 
relevant portions of the log are:

Attempting to install GRUB to a partitionless disk or to a partition. This is a

installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE 
and their use is discouraged.
